Many years ago, when the great World Tree Yggdrasil was very young, there existed a realm of gods and angels. Among the angels that lived in the branches of Yggdrasil were three sisters. These three sisters were called the Nord--the caretakers of the World Tree.

One of the Nords was a beautiful angel named Verthandi. Looking down through the boughs of the great World Tree, she observed the realm of mortals. One day, however, a great wind struck Yggdrasil. Verthandi lost her footing in the great wind, and fell through the great tree, down to the world of mortals.

As the divine angel fell to earth, the earth reached to the sky to meet her. A mountain rose from the earth, and a great wind brought her gently to earth. Her feet touched lightly to the earth, and a spring burst forth from the spot where the angel first touched earth.

Standing atop the great mountain, Verthandi surveyed the mortal world. The vale stretched endlessly around her, and the newly-formed divine falls cascaded down the virgin mountain. And there, at her very feet, was a mortal man, kneeling in awe.

Verthandi extended her slender hand to the man, and the man rose to his feet. The angel's six shimmering wings spread open, and shielded him from the sun.

"Why were you in such an empty place?" the angel asked the man.

"I'm a scholar of alchemy," the man replied. "I was here seeking the purpose of life when I saw you descend from heaven."

"The purpose of life?" Verthandi asked. Being a divine being, she had never contemplated purpose--her purpose was only to oversee the growth of the World Tree.

But, trapped in the mortal plane, her purpose was stripped from her. And so, she travelled with the man, and soon found herself in love with the charming and caring mortal. Throughout their travels, they would often return to the divine mountain from which the winds of heaven blew.

As with all mortals, however, the man grew old and died. For many years, Verthandi roamed the world in a lonely sadness. Her misery was commuted, however, when the Almighty discovered her and returned her to the heavens.

And there, among the angels, she found the man she had loved so much. He had died, and ascended to heaven as a new angel. And so, the two angels watched over the world, paying careful heed to that special mountain--the source of the winds. The place where earth rises to meet the heavens.
